2020 Athlete of the Year – Jody Virgne

Our 2020 Athlete of the YEAR is one of the longest-running CFRR members to date! When she’s not getting her workout on or managing her 4 girls and husband, she is serving her Round Rock community with the RRFD. She is such an inspiration to those around her and one of the absolute best people you could have as a classmate. Congratulations, Jody Virgne. Much deserved. Get to know Jody a little bit better…

1) What is your biggest motivation?

My 4 daughters – I want to be a positive role model for them!  I choose to move my body because I know the long-term health benefits of movement.  For me the biggest things are how it lowers my stress, allows me to be an active and present mom, and helps me feel strong in my work as a firefighter/paramedic.

2) Your favorite quote or words to live by?

The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. -Eleanor Roosevelt

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.  1 Corinthians 13:4-7

3) What is your current training goals/PRs?

My current goals are actually about stepping back and not putting pressure on myself to perform a certain way.  I have often lived my life striving for the next thing but have found that this can lead to stress and negative self image and esteem.  Instead, I am working on slowing down, being in the moment, and reducing stress and perfection in my life. I think it is amazing to keep working on getting stronger, and I also like to learn to listen to how some days my body needs less and some days I can do so much more!

4) Take us back to your first day of CrossFit… How did you feel? How do you compare it to workouts today?

I remember when Crossfit Round Rock first opened and my crew stopped by to check it out.  I initially started Crossfit to sculpt my body and was hoping to look a certain way, but now I have realized that CrossFit is no longer about that.  While I may not be as strong as I was 10 years ago, I am thrilled to have found a community where the emphasis is on health and strength and not outward appearances.

5) What advice do you have for new athletes just starting out in CrossFit?

Participate in this movement because you love it and the way it makes you feel, not because you think it is going to get you sculpted abs or a smaller jean size.

6) Tell us about a moment you felt most proud of yourself during a workout?

The most exciting moment during a workout was when I hit 97 double unders in a row.  I still strive for 100+, but it is a process.

7) What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?

My 4 girls and a crazy work schedule keep me pretty busy 😁.

8) What’s your favorite part of CrossFit Round Rock?

The community!  CFRR is more than just a gym.

9) If you could create a WOD and name it for yourself, what would it be?

Dead Runders: I love to run, double under, and deadlift!

10) How has your diet changed since starting CrossFit (if it has), and what foods do you rely on most?

Honestly, there was a period of time where I really bought into dieting and the whole paleo craze.  I lost weight, but I was starving, exhausted, and had constant GI issues.   It was literally horrible, but I thought that it would be worth it if I was thin.  It also triggered old eating disorder thoughts to sneak back in and created a sense of deprivation.  I strongly recommend against this or any form of dieting now in my life. I try to take an intuitive eating approach now where I am working on learning to trust my body and my cues to nourish me in a way that helps me feel good without shame or guilt.
