January Athlete of the Month – Barb Truesdale

This month’s Athlete of the Month is the one and only amazing Barb! She is as hardworking and determined as they come. She never complains and always shows up with a smile ready to tackle what’s next. She is your biggest cheerleader and loves to learn! She is truly an inspiration to us all at CFRR. We are so proud of you and feel very blessed you have called CFRR home for the last 5 and a half years! ❤️ There is no stopping her either!

1) What is your biggest motivation?

I want to be healthy and mobile as I get older and older and older….

2) Your favorite quote or words to live by?

This is a hard one. It depends on what’s going on. Maybe it’s this one for CrossFit:

“Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.” – John Wooden

These two are good also.

“The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” – Socrates

Or, I’ve learned this through the years:  “Judge not that you be not judged.” – Jesus

3) What is your current training goals/PRs?

I’m finally getting to a point where I can do level 2 of the workouts sometimes!  Yay me.  I want to do a real pull-up. And I want to learn to breathe better. I can’t say I want to run, but I know it would benefit me if I could run. I want to work on balance, too.

4) Take us back to your first day of CrossFit… How did you feel? How do you compare it to workouts today?

5 1/2 years ago, I was very intimidated.  I had to take Elements twice!  I never really understood the weight lifting movements.  Probably still don’t. But I’m getting better even though I still need clarification of what exactly the movement is we’re supposed to be doing.  I can’t tell you how many times Landon has to say “from the hang position!”

I’m no longer embarrassed that I have to scale almost every movement. However, I can tell a noticeable improvement in my abilities.

5) What advice do you have for new athletes just starting out in CrossFit?

Have fun. Don’t feel pressured. Be smart – push yourself, but listen to your body. Be patient.  CrossFit works. It just takes time.

6) Tell us about a moment you felt most proud of yourself during a workout?

When I got my first double under.  Gotta admit I still can’t string any together!

I was also proud when I realized that I was #5 on the list of female athletes in 2018 with the most PRs.  I hadn’t realized I was making that kind of progress.

7) What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?

Reading, travel, quilting, biking

8) What’s your favorite part of CrossFit Round Rock?

The camaraderie during the class and lack of judgment. I think Landon and Adrien have a great business model.  They make room for those of us who may never RX a single workout.  They help us identify our potential.

9) If you could create a WOD and name it for yourself, what would it be?

Just do it.  Or, I don’t want to!

10) How has your diet changed since starting CrossFit (if it has), and what foods do you rely on most?

I am now gluten-free and most of the time dairy-free. I still have issues with sugar. Foods I rely on the most?  Hmmm. Tuna fish, I think. Eggs, sweet potatoes, hamburger, spinach are always around.
