March Athlete of the Month – Nathan Hale

October 16, 2017.

This is Nathan Hale Day. The day he walked into CFRR and made a change to his life that would impact him forever. He had dabbled with some CrossFit before but had never really gotten too deep into it. He completed fundamentals and then hopped into group classes. He’s progressed in every aspect of fitness from gymnastics, weightlifting, monostructural components and nutrition. For a 19-year-old to sign up, pay for and follow a very strict nutrition program is very respectable. Along the way, Nathan also decided to take and pass the CrossFit Level 1 Test. Not an easy task.  Now Nathan is a staple in the CFRR community & has become a Brand Ambassador at CFRR to help new members feel at home. We asked Nathan a few questions about his journey and here are his answers.

1) What is your biggest motivation?

To live the healthiest life I can and to always strive to be the best version of myself.

2) Your favorite quote or words to live by?

“Everything happens for a reason”

3) What is your current training goals/PRs?

My goal is to compete in CrossFit professionally. I love the feeling of competition.

4) Take us back to your first day of CrossFit… How did you feel? How do you compare it to workouts today?

I was frustrated honestly because it humbled me and made me realize I wasn’t where I thought I was from a fitness standpoint. But now A year in I have to focus more on my weaknesses and push myself harder than I did back then.

5) What advice do you have for new athletes just starting out in CrossFit?

Be consistent and patient, the movements will come with time. Just show up and put in the effort.

6) Tell us about a moment you felt most proud of yourself during a workout?

Any workout with Olympic lifting. Because I feel like I always improve with them even though they are the most complicated, I can feel my form improve every time.

7) What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?

I’m a huge nerd. I’ve always wanted to look like the guys in comic books and shows I watched when I was a kid. They were always an inspiration to be better than I was.

8) What’s your favorite part of CrossFit Round Rock?

The quality of coaches. A lot of gyms don’t take the attention to detail and movement standards that the CFRR coaches do.

9) If you could create a WOD and name it for yourself, what would it be?

Just the worst.

10) How has your diet changed since starting CrossFit (if it has), and what foods do you rely on most?

It’s changed dramatically, I changed everything to help benefit my performance, sweet potatoes and rice are my best friends for carbs, I basically only eat chicken breast and bison when I want red meat.

-Nathan
We’ve also seen Nathan grow up and mature as a person. He’s embodied the idea of CrossFit (rests when he needs to, focuses on mobility, eats good, clean food, etc) which, in turn, will carry over into other aspects of his life such as job, family and relationships. He’s picking up and learning personality traits that are paramount to his success as a person and we are excited to see what the future holds for this kid. Well done Nathan! Keep up the good work and keep inspiring others!
