September Athlete of the Month – Amanda Turner

It’s time to turn the spotlight and recognize our September CFRR Athlete of the Month!

Congratulation Amanda Turner!!

Amanda’s CrossFit journey started with us 2018 when she bravely took her first steps in pursuit of a higher level of fitness, health and ultimately, life.

She quickly learned the journey is filled with challenges, obstacles, and sometimes-even setbacks. But with consistency, discipline, and perseverance none of which have stopped her from pushing beyond her comfort zone and grinding through the sweat, tears, and hard work it takes to reach her goals!

Amanda has proven she’s not a quitter, and we are thankful she choose us to stand proudly behind her along the way.

We can only hope Amanda is as proud of yourself, as we are of her!! Here are a few fun facts about Amanda so you can get to know her better.

1) What is your biggest motivation?

I want to live a long, healthy and happy life doing what I love without physical limitations. I want others to see me, at any age, making health and wellness a priority and inspire others to do the same.

2) Your favorite quote or words to live by?

Be strong and courageous- Deuteronomy 31:6

3) What are your current training goals/PRs?

With the busyness of the school year just beginning and my husband traveling more, my current goal is to be consistent, show up and work hard. If I could consistently get kipping PU’s and handstand walks- that’d be cool, too.

4) Take us back to your first day of CrossFit… How did you feel? How do you compare it to workouts today?

I arrived 20 minutes early and sat in my car telling myself to “be strong and courageous” while googling the names of the movements and watching videos on how to perform them so I didn’t have to talk to anyone or admit I had no idea what I was doing. I refused to go to any class if Laura King wasn’t coaching because I was so intimidated. She was the one doing Fundamentals with me and I felt pretty comfortable with her (especially after she picked up my underwear off the floor that I was unaware had fallen out of my bag.  Thanks, girl! Love ya!😨) A few classes in, LK had to have someone cover her class and I was thrown into a class with Landon. I debated about leaving but I was already there so…..I sucked it up and I’m still here.

The workouts have not gotten “easier” as I am always pushing toward the next goal. My confidence level, however, has increased in some regard and I’ve learned what movements I struggle with and which I look forward to.

5) What advice do you have for new athletes just starting out in CrossFit?

Check yo’ bag for yo’ drawers!

But seriously, just show up. We all have to start somewhere and there is no judgment. Only a community that wants to see you succeed in your health and fitness goals and will help you along the way.

6) Tell us about a moment you felt most proud of yourself during a workout?

I still think I must have been dreaming or I don’t remember accurately because this has not happened since- I PR’d on a 95# squat snatch. Such a struggle for me as most know but that day I got out of my head and surprised myself.

(Landon’s probably thinking “Well, if she’d ever show back up for OLY again this could be a reality…”)

7) What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?

I enjoy running and want to get back into it, as well as trail running. Church, reading anything that grows me personally or professionally, listening to Dave Ramsey podcasts, binge watching 80’s sitcoms and true crime, traveling, watching sports, and being with Brock and our 15-year-old Chihuahua, Ment. I am that crazy, helicopter dog-mom.

8) What’s your favorite part of CrossFit Round Rock?

The community and being able to belong to a group of like-minded people.

9) If you could create a WOD and name it for yourself, what would it be?

Turner, The Tired Teacher……..OR………….The Golden Girl

10) How has your diet changed since starting CrossFit (if it has), and what foods do you rely on most?

Nutrition is still a work in progress and it always will be for me. Taking the 42-Day Challenge helped me learn how to meal prep and see the value and importance in doing so. I meal prep breakfast and lunch and it makes life so much easier since I am on the go from 4:30am-6:30pm now that school is back in session. I also cut out most snacking as I’ve learned I can do without and frankly because I don’t have time.

I rely heavily on Spark every morning; this is how I help cut out sodas. I also still prepare meals from the challenge recipe book. Quick, easy and delicious.
